Salt & Vinegar Chips
Sea Salt & Vinegar chips are delicious, that's a fact. Unfortunately, not every bag of these savory potato crisps is as delicious as the next. There is bag-to-bag variation within brands, but most of the differences can be found between the many varieties of SSV chips available across the United States.
"Dirty" Potato Chips - Sea Salt & Vinegar
The "Dirty" Potato Chip company says that they "kettle cook in a premium peanut oil blended for a crunchier, tastier potato chip"--right on the front of every bag. I couldn't tell whether peanut oil led to crunchier chip than the other options would have (sunflower oil, for example), but it does make this a decidedly fattier snack: 15g per serving at 280 calories. That's a greasiness that keeps on giving--long after the chips are gone, the inside of the bag is covered in slicks that threaten to spread right to the keyboard if extra care isn't taken with the napkin. The nutritional facts write a big taste check that these chips just can't cash. A snacker hoping to be rewarded with a richer, more fulfilling SSV experience will walk away disappointed. These chips lack bite, and the flavoring is embarassingly uneven. Clearly, this "Dirty" chip company is playing to an equally "dirty" crowd; while the guy reading On the Road in his flannel shirt may enjoy the three-tone packaging and general earthiness of these coffeehouse denizens, the refined vinegar man's palatte will not be pleased by these scamps of the SSV world.
